Headache Treatment

Physical therapy is a successful treatment option for your headaches.  One key to successful treatment of your headaches is identifying the type of headache that you have.  This is easier said than done as the symptoms may be similar and it is not uncommon to suffer from more than one type of headache.

TMJ – Treatment of Temporalmandibular Disorders

Temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) disorders affect individuals of all ages and are especially problematic in that they affect oral functions including talking, laughing and eating.  The head, jaw and neck exhibit a delicate inter-relationship between nerves, muscles and joints.  The resultant pain can manifest itself  in headache, neck ache, facial pain and difficulty with opening and closing of the mouth.

Typically symptoms may include:

  • Jaw joint/muscle pain
  • Jaw locking
  • Jaw noise
  • Ear pain
  • Atypical tooth pain 

Neck Pain

A common complaint we hear from neck pain patients is that they have a stiff neck, or sharp pain traveling down an extremity. Here is a list of some of the most common injuries associated with neck pain:

  • Radiculopathy
  • Whiplash
  • Arthritic Conditions

 

Shoulder Pain

There are many injuries commonly associated with the shoulder. Here is a list of some of the most common injuries associated with shoulder pain:

  • Rotator cuff strains/repairs
  • Joint replacement
  • SLAP lesions
  • Impingement syndrome

Elbow Pain

The most common forms of elbow pain are caused by overuse of the muscles in your arm and forearm. These are the muscles used to carry, twist and grip objects with your hand. That’s why with an elbow injury, a movement of the wrist or hand will cause pain in the elbow. These are the most common injuries associated with elbow pain:

  • Golfer’s Elbow
  • Tennis Elbow / Lateral Epicondylitis

Low Back Pain

  • Carpal Tunnel

Mid-Back Pain

Injuries associated with mid-back pain are typically related to the ribs. Pain in the middle of the back is not as common as neck or low back pain. This is because the mid-back doesn’t flex as much as the neck or lower back area. Instead, the mid-back works with the ribs to help protect vital organs and stabilize the back.
