Each year one out of three people aged 65 or older will fall. It may surprise you that 20%-30% of those who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries that can be debilitating. According to the National Council on Aging, an older adult is seen in the emergency room for a fall-related injury every 15 seconds. Falling is not a normal part of aging! There are a multitude of issues that can increase your risk for falls. If you have one or more of the risk factors listed below, you may want to consider being evaluated for your risk for falls by your physical therapist.
- Generalized weakness
- Poor vision
- Previous falls
- Multiple prescription medications
- Fear of falls
- Unstable blood pressure
- Tripping hazards in the home
- Medical conditions that limit mobility
The good news is that physical therapy can help with some of these issues! Prevention is the key to decreasing your risk or injury due to a fall. Take action and make changes so you can maintain your independence and stay active.
Wenger Physical Therapy offers a Balance and Falls Prevention program! If you participate in the program you will be assessed by a physical therapist or personal trainer based on your needs.
