Most patients tolerate water therapy well and find it an effective adjunct to land based therapy. It allows for non-weight bearing or limited weight bearing exercise, promotes relaxation, decreases muscle spasms, increases range of motion and improves circulation.
The pool at Wenger Physical Therapy is maintained at 92 degrees F. Patients find this temperature comfortable even if they have had limited previous exposure to exercising in a pool.
For some patients, use of the pool is only temporary designed to improve early mobilization. These individuals gradually progress to a land-based program. Other individuals, especially those with fibromyalgia or arthritic conditions, find the warm water an effective tool in the long-term self-management of their condition. The pool provides an option for some patients to improve faster and more completely.
